What is score?

  • The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) is the global body that sets the standards for specialty coffee. Their scoring system, based on a 100-point scale, evaluates coffees based on various factors like aroma, flavour, acidity, body, aftertaste, sweetness and balance. Coffees scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade, with those scoring 86+ representing the top tier of quality and complexity.

What is single origin?

  • Single origin means the coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative, rather than a blend from multiple places. This allows you to experience the unique characteristics of that area’s climate, soil, and processing methods.

What are tasting notes?

  • Tasting notes describe the natural flavours found in the coffee, such as chocolate, citrus, or floral tones. These are not added flavours but arise from the bean’s variety, growing conditions, and roasting process.

What is the processing method?

  • This refers to how coffee beans are removed from the cherry after harvesting, which influences their final taste.
  • Free UK royal mail tracked 48 delivery on all orders over £25.

Abadatezuka Cooperative

Abadatezuka Cooperative is a group of smallholder farmers in Rwanda's Western Province who deliver their coffee cherries to the Cyato Washing Station in the Nayamasheke district. Situated at 1,850 meters above sea level, the station processes coffee grown at elevations reaching 2,200 meters, contributing to the beans' dense and complex flavour. The cooperative sources coffee from nearby areas, including Kivoga, Kageyo, Rusumo, Gatare, and Nsinduka. Established in 2017, the washing station plays a key role in refining the region’s coffee quality.

What makes this cooperative’s coffee particularly unique is the influence of native honeybees from the nearby Nyungwe Forest. Their bee-assisted pollination, combined with the region's fertile black humus and sandy soil and the cool, lake-influenced climate from Lake Kivu, contributes to the coffee’s distinct and vibrant profile. Impressively, the farmers use no synthetic inputs, maintaining a natural and sustainable approach to cultivation.

Rwanda - Western Province

Bordering Lake Kivu and the Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda’s Western Province is a lush, tropical region known for its ideal coffee-growing conditions. The high altitudes, reaching up to 2,200 meters, and the region’s rich sandy and black humus soil create the perfect environment for cultivating high-quality specialty coffee.

The province’s proximity to Lake Kivu provides a cool, humid microclimate, which slows the coffee cherries' maturation, allowing for more concentrated sugars and complex flavours. This combination of fertile soil, optimal elevation, and favourable climate has enabled small producers and washing stations to produce exceptional specialty coffee, putting Rwanda firmly on the map as a top-tier origin.

Natural Processing

This lot is naturally processed, where ripe cherries are carefully sun-dried on raised beds and cement patios. During the drying process, the cherries are regularly turned to ensure even drying.
