Citronella, Blueberries, Pineapple, Nutmeg

This past August, we travelled to the renowned Café Granja La Esperanza in Colombia, searching for exceptional coffees to bring back to our Coffee Gems community.  We were captivated by this Geisha Natural, and to preserve its delicate flavours, we roasted it on our mini roaster brought especially for these beans. This coffee represents our commitment to sourcing and delivering the freshest, highest-quality coffee.

What is score?

  • The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) is the global body that sets the standards for specialty coffee. Their scoring system, based on a 100-point scale, evaluates coffees based on various factors like aroma, flavour, acidity, body, aftertaste, sweetness and balance. Coffees scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade, with those scoring 86+ representing the top tier of quality and complexity.

What is single origin?

  • Single origin means the coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative, rather than a blend from multiple places. This allows you to experience the unique characteristics of that area’s climate, soil, and processing methods.

What are tasting notes?

  • Tasting notes describe the natural flavours found in the coffee, such as chocolate, citrus, or floral tones. These are not added flavours but arise from the bean’s variety, growing conditions, and roasting process.

What is the processing method?

  • This refers to how coffee beans are removed from the cherry after harvesting, which influences their final taste.
  • Free UK royal mail tracked 48 delivery on all orders over £25.

Rigoberto Herrera

In 2007, Rigoberto Herrera took on the challenge of managing La Carleida, a farm in Panama’s Boquete region. Just a year later, he secured first place in the Best Coffee of Panama competition, a turning point in his career.

Inspired by this success, he brought Geisha seeds to Colombia, beginning a new chapter for Granja La Esperanza. Adapting this delicate varietal to Colombia’s climate was no small feat, but through dedication and innovation, he transformed the farm into a global leader in speciality coffee. Today, Granja La Esperanza is known for its rare varietals and exceptional cup quality, continually pushing the boundaries of coffee excellence.

Finca La Esperanza

La Esperanza, nestled in the Colombian highlands, is a meticulously managed coffee farm with a focus on both aesthetics and innovation. Beyond varietal exploration, the farm is known for its competition-winning coffees and advanced processing techniques. La Esperanza maintains a welcoming atmosphere for guests, with comfortable accommodations in the colourful main building. A new cupping room with mountain views is under construction. Meanwhile, the farm utilizes a combination of traditional and modern drying methods, including solar and mechanical dryers, alongside meticulous fermentation processes in barrels.

Natural Anaerobic

This exceptional coffee undergoes a unique natural anaerobic fermentation process. First, the Brix levels are carefully measured to ensure optimal ripeness. Then, the cherries are placed in a controlled anaerobic environment for 168 hours, allowing the coffee's distinctive character to fully develop. This meticulous process enhances the coffee's inherent sweetness and complexity.

Following fermentation, the cherries are dried in mechanical dryers at a constant 38°C for 8 to 12 days, ensuring consistency and preserving the delicate nuances developed during fermentation. Finally, the beans are stored in climate-controlled warehouses, maintaining optimal conditions until they're ready for roasting.
