What is score?

  • The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) is the global body that sets the standards for specialty coffee. Their scoring system, based on a 100-point scale, evaluates coffees based on various factors like aroma, flavour, acidity, body, aftertaste, sweetness and balance. Coffees scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade, with those scoring 86+ representing the top tier of quality and complexity.

What is single origin?

  • Single origin means the coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative, rather than a blend from multiple places. This allows you to experience the unique characteristics of that area’s climate, soil, and processing methods.

What are tasting notes?

  • Tasting notes describe the natural flavours found in the coffee, such as chocolate, citrus, or floral tones. These are not added flavours but arise from the bean’s variety, growing conditions, and roasting process.

What is the processing method?

  • This refers to how coffee beans are removed from the cherry after harvesting, which influences their final taste.
  • Free UK Royal Mail tracked 48 delivery on all orders over £25.
  • For orders under £25 delivery is charged at £2.95.
  • Coffees roasted to order. One business day before dispatch.
  • Worldwide delivery available, calculated at checkout.

Rigoberto Herrera

In 2007, Rigoberto Herrera took on the challenge of managing La Carleida, a farm in Panama’s Boquete region. Just a year later, he secured first place in the Best Coffee of Panama competition, a turning point in his career.

Inspired by this success, he brought Geisha seeds to Colombia, beginning a new chapter for Granja La Esperanza. Adapting this delicate varietal to Colombia’s climate was no small feat, but through dedication and innovation, he transformed the farm into a global leader in speciality coffee. Today, Granja La Esperanza is known for its rare varietals and exceptional cup quality, continually pushing the boundaries of coffee excellence.

Cerro Azul

Cerro Azul sits on a steep peak overlooking Trujillo in Valle del Cauca, owned by Rigoberto Herrara and part of the Café Granja La Esperanza family. Purchased in 2007, the farm was transformed in 2008 when all existing plants were removed and replaced with Geisha, brought directly from Panama, making it one of the first Geisha farms in Colombia. Today the farm is split into 7 lots across 17 hectares, harvested all year round, with one full time employee managing the land and 15 to 20 pickers joining at harvest. The steep slopes, often shrouded in cloud until early afternoon and covered in colourful lichen, create a striking and unique growing environment. Café Granja also funds a school nearby, open to the children of farm workers and the surrounding community, a small but powerful symbol of the values behind every bag.

Natural Processing

The whole cherry is left to dry slowly with the fruit still intact, rather than removed beforehand. At Café Granja La Esperanza, this is taken to another level entirely.

Their extreme processing protocols involve meticulous control over fermentation time, temperature and drying conditions, allowing the sugars and fruit character of the cherry to develop far beyond what natural processing typically achieves. The result is a cup with extraordinary depth and complexity, with apricot, mint and blueberry notes that owe as much to this precision as they do to the coffee itself.
