What is score?

  • The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) is the global body that sets the standards for specialty coffee. Their scoring system, based on a 100-point scale, evaluates coffees based on various factors like aroma, flavour, acidity, body, aftertaste, sweetness and balance. Coffees scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade, with those scoring 86+ representing the top tier of quality and complexity.

What is single origin?

  • Single origin means the coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative, rather than a blend from multiple places. This allows you to experience the unique characteristics of that area’s climate, soil, and processing methods.

What are tasting notes?

  • Tasting notes describe the natural flavours found in the coffee, such as chocolate, citrus, or floral tones. These are not added flavours but arise from the bean’s variety, growing conditions, and roasting process.

What is the processing method?

  • This refers to how coffee beans are removed from the cherry after harvesting, which influences their final taste.
  • Free UK Royal Mail tracked 48 delivery on all orders over £25.
  • For orders under £25 delivery is charged at £2.95.

Gaudencio Carranza

Gaudencio Carranza is a guardian of coffee history in his community. He is a descendant of the first Me'phaa indigenous people to cultivate coffee in the region, carrying forward a lineage that is deeply intertwined with the land. For over 18 years, Gaudencio has viewed coffee not just as a crop, but as a vocation "in his blood." This passion is a collective effort; he works side-by-side with his wife, Francisca Mejía Barrera, and their three sons—Luis, Juan Carlos, and Geovany.

The family’s dedication is resilient. In an area where many producers are forced by economic hardship to sell to predatory middlemen (or "coyotes") at low prices, the Carranzas have chosen a harder path. By focusing on exceptional quality and partnering with buyers who provide detailed feedback, they are securing a future where their labor is valued and their indigenous heritage is preserved.

About the Farms

The production takes place on a thriving 10-hectare estate located in the Montaña Alta region of Guerrero, specifically within Colombia de Guadalupe. The land is divided into five distinct farms: Cocoyul, Bordo de Santa Cruz, Plan de Carranza, El Mango, and Pie Mosquito. Situated at elevations between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level, these plots are managed as "edible forests" rather than standard plantations.

Practicing traditional polyculture, the estate supports immense biodiversity. The coffee plants—which include Typica, Bourbon, Mundo Novo, Costa Rica 95, and Castillo varieties—grow alongside native timber trees and over 30 species of food crops, including legumes and fruits. This complex ecosystem helps the crops withstand environmental challenges such as drought and coffee leaf rust.

Natural Processing

This lot is naturally processed, where ripe cherries are carefully sun-dried on raised beds and cement patios. During the drying process, the cherries are regularly turned to ensure even drying.
