Kenya makes coffees that people talk about, and Kangunu AA shows why. It comes from the volcanic slopes of Murang’a, grown at 1,700 to 1,800 metres by a community of about 3,000 smallholders. It is washed, soaked and dried in the sun with a patience that can’t be hurried.

What is score?

  • The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) is the global body that sets the standards for specialty coffee. Their scoring system, based on a 100-point scale, evaluates coffees based on various factors like aroma, flavour, acidity, body, aftertaste, sweetness and balance. Coffees scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade, with those scoring 86+ representing the top tier of quality and complexity.

What is single origin?

  • Single origin means the coffee comes from one specific region, farm, or cooperative, rather than a blend from multiple places. This allows you to experience the unique characteristics of that area’s climate, soil, and processing methods.

What are tasting notes?

  • Tasting notes describe the natural flavours found in the coffee, such as chocolate, citrus, or floral tones. These are not added flavours but arise from the bean’s variety, growing conditions, and roasting process.

What is the processing method?

  • This refers to how coffee beans are removed from the cherry after harvesting, which influences their final taste.

Kangunu Farmers

Behind this coffee are about 3,000 people, each with a plot of less than a hectare, tended by hand on the cool volcanic hills. Every one of them picks only ripe cherry and brings it to the factory, so a lot of Kangunu AA is really thousands of small harvests added together. Their plots grow SL28 and SL34, Kenyan varieties developed in the 1930s, alongside the newer Ruiru 11 and Batian. The cool air (12 to 25°C) and the volcanic soil slow the cherry down, so it ripens gradually and fully.

Kangunu Cooperative

Kangunu isn’t a farm in the usual sense, it’s a cooperative. Kangunu Farmers Cooperative Society was registered in 1998 and is built around one factory in Mathioya, in Murang’a. It was once linked to two neighbouring societies, Giant Kagima and Kiriti, before standing on its own. Today the factory is where everything comes together: ripe cherry from the whole community arrives, is sorted, processed and dried under one roof, and looked after by the people who own it. It even draws its water from the Kangunu stream and recirculates it to conserve it.

Washed Processing

Fully washed, with a Kenyan twist. Only the ripest cherry is kept at the factory, then pulped and fermented for around 12 to 24 hours. After that the coffee soaks in clean water for a further 24 hours, a step the Kenyan washed process is known for and one believed to give a cleaner, brighter cup. It then moves to raised beds or covered solar driers and dries for about 7 to 21 days. During that time it’s raked often, covered in the heat of the day and sheltered at night.
